Pallet Rack – New vs Used

Are you thinking about replacing, adding, or creating a space for your pallet rack? Have you weighed your options when it comes to new vs used pallet rack? When companies are thinking about purchasing pallet rack, they sometimes must stick to a budget. In our current economy, companies will look at saving a dollar by putting used shelving into their warehouse, but is that always the better way to go?

Used shelving might seem more cost effective but will it save us in the long run? Used shelving is not always the go to as we have different criteria we must consider when putting together a warehouse.

  • Appearance – Sometimes we do not know what we will get when purchasing used shelving. You must contend with scratches on the finish, rust, or dents. If you are not meticulous about colors, you may have several pieces to choose from and there is a possibility none of them match color wise.
  • Durability – Sometimes used shelving is stored out in the elements. This means it can come rusted and dented. Depending on age, rust and dents may not be a factor but in previous blog posts, we see that the age of our pallet rack can be a factor in longevity.
  • Manufactured – We do not always know where the used pallet rack was manufactured. It may or may not have been manufactured in the United States and with that you run into a few factors, like capacity and durability.
  • Capacity – Depending on what you are putting on your shelves, you may not have a true capacity for each piece you put up. Without knowing your capacity, you will be limited to what you can place on your pallet rack, and eventually a company might have to purchase more pallet rack to house their material.
  • Warranty – most to all companies will not provide a warranty on used shelving. They do not know where the shelving is coming from or made and cannot provide a warranty on defects.

New shelving is not always the most cost effective, but it does have its upsides that used does not. Knowing where your pallet rack is manufactured, will give you peace of mind. Here are a few reasons why spending a few extra dollars will benefit you over time.

  • Longevity – New pallet rack will have a longer shelf life so to speak. There should not be any wear and tear damage or rust on your new shelving. This will allow you to use it for many years longer than used shelving.
  • Appearance – By purchasing new shelving, you can get everything in the color scheme you desire and to add the same color pallet rack to your current color scheme. The appearance of new shelving will also give your warehouse a modern, clean, and eye appealing look.
  • Manufactured – Knowing where your pallet rack was manufactured will give you peace of mind. If you are a repeat customer of Shelving Concepts, you know that our steel meets all RMI standards and requirements to be on the market. Shelving Concepts has a team of engineers who also give us the specs of each product, so you know the standards have been met.
  • Capacity – New pallet rack will have the capacity you are looking for and you know that you can securely place your material on each level. New shelving may also give you the ability to buy less by putting more on the pallet rack.
  • Warranty – Shelving Concepts shelving is backed by a one-year warranty and covers manufacturing defects.

Whether it is new or used pallet rack or shelving you are looking for, take the time to weigh out the advantages and disadvantages of each. If the dollar is keeping you from purchasing new rack, speak with one of our sales representatives to discuss your budget and plans for your new or expanding warehouse.
