Is it Time to Replace Your Pallet Rack?

Shelving Concepts manufactures pallet rack uprights in their current location of Houston, TX. We use roll-formed steel to make all our uprights, with different gauges to match the capacities our customers need. Even though we use a high-quality P&O 55K PSI steel that meets RMI standards, all pallet racks have a service life.

Damage

The number one reason to consider replacing your pallet rack is damage. Most pallet rack is found in a warehouse setting, so collisions with a forklift from time to time are bound to happen. Damage will weaken the steel frame, change the structure, and capacity abilities of the upright. Shelving Concepts will always recommend replacing the upright vs repairing it. The cost to repair is about the same price to replace it. By replacing the upright, the integrity of the steel will not be compromised.

Age

The age of your pallet rack is also a factor. Over time the wear and tear of adding and subtracting the weight of a product from the pallet rack will stretch and stress the molecules of the pallet rack. If your pallet rack never receives damage from an outside source, at some point it will weaken on its own due to the constant use of the material. There is no definitive age we can recommend changing out your pallet rack, that determination is up to your company’s warehouse safety inspector.

Growth

As a business grows, so does the demand for storage in the warehouse. Adding or changing your pallet rack formation will allow you to relieve the stress you might be putting onto the pallet rack over time, or it will allow you to store more product. Either way, the growth of a business creates pallet rack durability by adding more units to your existing formation.

Crossbeams

When we think about pallet rack damage, we think most of the damage happens to the uprights, but we also need to look at the crossbeams. A pair of crossbeams is suspectable to damage by forklift forks or by over stacking. Overtime, you will see crossbeam deflection due to the stress of overloading the pair crossbeams or having a pair of crossbeams hold the same weight it has always held with damage to them. As soon as there is damage to the crossbeams or deflection is encountered, it is time to replace the pair of crossbeams and redistribute the weight of your product.

Wire Decks

Wire decks are another piece of your pallet rack you need to keep an eye on. Overtime wire decks are also susceptible to damage and warping due to wear and tear, along with overloading.

Protection

Shelving Concepts offers safety measures to protect your pallet rack. We sell column guards, end of row protectors, and a wire guidance system to help prevent forklift damage.

Shelving Concepts also provides capacity stickers for your crossbeams upon request. These stickers will provide your employee with how much weight can be stacked on each pair of crossbeams to prevent stacking more than the recommended weight.

For your wire deck, Shelving Concepts sells pallet supports. This will increase the capacity of your wire deck to meet the capacity of your crossbeams.

We cannot prevent all pallet rack accidents; however, you can contact a sales rep today to design and put together a layout to minimize the damage and create longevity for your pallet rack system.
